I just keep sewing those strips together and have to admit the basket is still overflowing
what fun making these blocks has been, its mindless sewing yet I love the result!
Sometimes the simplest quilt blocks turn out so graphic and appealing to me.
Its nice to make a quilt from my fabric collection .
My strips are 1 1/2" cut and the block will be 5" finished.
incase your inspired to make one using your scrap basket!
I cut the strips down to approx 6 1/2" then sewed 5 together
alternating light /dark,yes there are times I did medium/dark
I like the look! I may just have to make 2 of these quilts, one to donate :) then maybe the strips will be used up!
you think? Sorry to say I doubt it!!!
I think I will make a mini quilt using this block as well.
Here check out Janet's quilt she started using her fabric collection and a simple block yet graphic result, yes we have been having conversations about making quilts from our stash and using traditional blocks.
my next quilt from the scrap bin I am thinking little nine patches :)

check out Tara's blog
she has incredible pictures from various quilt shows she has been to lately

It has a beautiful woven look. The graphic effect from such simple blocks is truly lovely. I love how the lightest strips make the quilt have a little sparkle too. Good use of stash!

Your scrappy scraps are looking wonderful! I made a very small quilt similiar to this with Jo fabrics in Jo Club. Will you be making yourself a small one too for your collection?

Yep, simple is a nice change sometimes. It's fun to have mindless sewing and still end up with a pretty project.

Before the big packing up, I had started to make 1-1/2" strips. And I do believe when I finally get unpacked, I'll be making more, as I really love this idea. Thanks for sharing.

wonderful way to use up your scraps... it looks great! Isn't that called a "railfence" or "fencerail" block? i've only been quilting for about a year, so I'm still learning techniques and block names.

I love the simple blocks, too. Always back to the fabrics though, aren't we? Which ones play well together. That's the magic.

That just looks great. I think you might inspire some of us to do the same thing.

Yes, yes, this has the look of an EXCELLENT mindless sew for a quilt retreat. And then the sewer can feel virtuous about using the scraps, of which we all have a ton.

I made a Log Cabin strictly from scrap strips last year and seem to have ended up with more scraps than I started with. That seems to go contrary to the laws of physics but I think things like natural law kind of go on pause in my sewing room.

ANYWAY--very cool quilt you have there on that design wall...

Oh wow Kathie!!!
I love it...what a lovely site it is there on the wall!
So simple, but so beautiful!

I'm with you, sometimes the simplest pattern makes the prettiest quilt.
I love how your scrappy quilt is coming out. It is amazing how slowly a scrap basket will diminsh.

I can't believe all the piecing you get done. I really need to get into my sewing room and finish my quilts.
I am so lazy, I prefer to sit in my chair and work on hand projects while I watch tv.

Rail Fence quilts are favorites of mine and it's been a while since I've done one but I guess it will have to wait because after playing in the strings for the rest of this month I've got a couple other tops planned already. This one is going to be gorgeous!

Hi Kathie,

This quilt will be stunning. The scrappy ones always catch my eye and heart. We spend so much time organizing fabrics into quilts...sometimes it's best to get out of the way and let the scraps tell the story.

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

NOw I want to make one like that, and I don't need another project to distract me. Yours is looking gorgeous, amazing what simple scraps can do.

Kathie I too love making quilts from my scrap bin. For some reason it does bring a sense of gratification.

What a great use of your scraps -- I love the graphic look of this quilt! But tell me....how did you end up with all of those strips?

julieQ said...

Love, love your quilt! It is kind of green/thrifty...look at what you made from your scraps! By the way, I got YOUR calender today...the one with your quilt on the FRONT! I was so proud!

I love it!!! I do need to empty out my scrap bins...I really should not add anything else to my list this month but you are tempting me :)

Kathie, I just love your blog and your quilts. Thanks for sharing your skills and tutorials. I would love to make rail fence quilt one day to use up scraps from my stash. I have signed up to follow your blog and will come back and visit more often - Hugs Natima

I agree with Janet about the woven look. Beautiful. Something about scrappy quilts is just so appealing.

This quilt is going to be a great document of your fabric collection. View it as a history project. I am working on a very mini version of the same rail fence design. Hopefully, I can get some pics of it online this weekend.
