Here is my little quilt I whipped up yesterday from the fabrics I showed the other day. I wanted to play with utility quilting using valdani pearle cotton I have heard so much about. These are the ones I bought at the Lancaster quilt show , luckily one of them works ! Carolyn is writing a book on utility quilting, you can bet I will be first in line to buy one! I am fascinated with this type of quilting now. I have seen it used in so many antique quilts.

This is my friend Patty's Nine Patch and Crossroads quilt.
She made this quilt using a pattern from Betsy's book, Gone To Texas.
Patty was able to go shopping where Betsy works, Lone Star House of Quilts . She offered to send me her left over fabrics when I said oh now I have to make this quilt too! I am thrilled to start this quilt as it is one I have wanted to make from the book! How lucky am I??? Thanks Patty!

oh and yes I am still working on the drunkard path blocks, its nice to have a piecing project on the go now too!
too bad I didn't have two design walls though.

I love what you made from those fabrics! Thet have a great texture. The thing I like about utility quilting is you can see the stitches. Why hide all that work. Lucky you with the fabrics. I like that pattern, too. Actually, the whole book is great.

Okay Kathie does utility quilting = big stitch quilting? I like it and it goes quick too.

I also really like the little quilt you just "whipped" up yesterday...you are fast!

Love the little quilt. I look forward to hearing how the quilting goes - I love the idea of a larger thread and maybe bigger stitches? Will have to check it out.
The nine patch/crossroads quilt looks fabulous... what a great two-block pattern. Have fun with it!

Cute little quilt. Amazing how one block pattern can creates nine patch and hour glass in one quilt. Love it. So are you going to quilt with valdani Pearle cotton? Hugs Nat

Your little quilt is looking fun! I've learned hand quilting with pearle cotton from "Material Obsession" book and some kit from Australia a few years ago. But haven't really tried that to my quilt yet. Just practiced. After seeing yours done, I may have to get there, too ;) Your friend's quilt looks gorgeous!!

Okay, now I want to make that quilt, too. When does it stop? So much inspiration and so little time and energy! The little and nine patch quilts are both wonderful!

Some of us could use more than 2 design walls - lol.
I like your new little quilt - I'm very curious to see how you quilt it.
It looks like you are having fun with your new 9 patch project :0)

Is utility stitching the same thing as big stitch? My friend does this to alot of her quilts and it always looks wonderful! She not only uses the valdani threads but crochet thread.
Your little quilt (top photo) is just darling...so simple...love it!

Look at what 3 humble pieces of fabric under your skillful hands can become! Lovely little quilt!

I hand quilt mostly with Pearl Cotton. They are very forgiving for a not so fine quilter as moi. I must get my hand on some of those Valdani. The variegated ones are gorgeous.

Your latest quilt top is cute. I love to do utility stitching. My favorite pattern is the Baptist Fan. The quilt from Betsy's books looks tempting to me as well. Her family history and the quilt patterns really touch my soul.

Firstly Kathie, your friend's 9-patch and cross-roads is just gorgeous, and so will yours be as well!!! I love, love the scrappiness of this quilt. I have the book, so will now go and reinvestigate that pattern LOL!!!
Please explain what utility quilting is, I think I know what is meant by that term, but could you clarify that for me. I haven't used perle cotton for quilting, but I do know that using this thread for quilting is becoming more popular!!!

I love Valdani tread. I sell both the floss, the pearl thread and the quilting tread in my shop. Utility quilting is great sometimes, especially on one-patch quilts or other "simple" quilts. I have just purchased Betsy's book also and I love it. There are several of the projects in the book I would like to try.

I want to try utility quilting too. That is how my maternal grandmother quilted all of her quilts. I will have to make another baby quilt to try it on.

I love that quilt from the Gone to Texas book. I have the book and have started making blocks for the Gone to Texas quilt. I'm taking the Jo Morton Little Women class at Lone Star House of Quilts which Betsy teaches and someone in the class held up their 9-patch & crossroads quilt. I wonder if it was your friend.

I LOVE Betsy and her book!! She is such a sweet gal and did a great job on all the quilts in the book. I did a Jo Morton class with her a couple of years ago. YOUR quilt is beautiful--now I gotta go get my book out and start that quilt! LOL

LOVE that quilt! I don't have that book, but will look for it. Can someone tell me how big the nine patch block is? 4 inches? It is hard to tell from the pic. Thanks
