Happy New Year!
Here is my first little quilt of the year. Don't you just love the block in a smaller size? I do! Here the quilt will be 8" x 12" finished. This block reminds me of those pinwheels I had as a child and you blew on it or ran to make it go, remember those?
I haven't decided whether or not to put a border on it .

I am happy to share the basic pattern with you for your own personal use. The blocks are 4" finished so each unit 2" finished If you would like to make your own here is the template measurements so you can make your own. I used a template plastic , cardboard would work too, you just need to be able to trace from it. The top is 1.25 and the bottom is 1.75 inches. The height is 2.5" I know it looks weird size wise when you lay it out but trust me it works!!! I cut a 2.5" strip and then traced the template and cut out 4 red and 4 background, REMEMBER to have the fabric right side up or your fabric will not be facing the right direction:) ask me how I know?

Using a charm square would work perfect for this project . You can get 4 out of one charm squares easily.

When you sew a unit together remember to stagger it a bit to have them line up perfectly like here in the picture

4 units makes one block for this size quilt you will make 6 blocks., next I am going to make a 9 block quilt, 3 x 3 I think would be great too!

the little quilt with borders looks great too but still haven't decided. The borders were cut at 2.5"
and here is the progress on my large quilt...I am going to try and make it a charm quilt, do not use the same red fabric twice!

PLEASE if you make this little quilt and show it on your blog link back to my blog showing others where they can find the pattern.
Thanks, have fun and I can't wait to see a few of these little quilts around blogland in all different fabrics and colors!
My goal is to make 12 more little quilts this year, stay tuned for next months quilt, I hope you will join me in making little quilts this year.

the mini looks so cute Kathie, I might just try and have a play with that one. Thanks for sharing. I love tessellated designs and I'm mad about red. The biggie looks great.

The large one on your design board definately catches the eye. The little version is beautiful

I loved those pinwheels as a child, and I love this version as an adult. I do like the border on the little quilt.
Your large one looks great. I would not have enough different reds to do a charm quilt like that. It looks like you are nearing the finish.
This evening I actually put the flimsy finishes of three of the 8 I have made this year on my design wall. I am liking those minis. More to come!

Thank you for your directions Kathie. Maybe I'm going to make a mini scrappy.
Happy New Year.

I do like the red and white. I think the border for the smaller quilt looks right and I love the bigger quilt. I will be watching your little quilt progress in 2012.

They do look like children's pinwheels, very sweet. That's a good goal, to get 12 mini quilts made in 2012, although in my case, I should say, get 12 tops sandwiched and quilted. Now that would be a nice wall of quilts. Happy New Year, Kathie!

Love these blocks and thanks so much for the tutorial,

I have made this pattern a number of times but never with just two colors. That sure looks a lot easier than trying to get the right color on each side.

I love this in two colours. My pink stash is somewhat overwhelming at the moment so may be just the thing to try to reduce it a little.

I think I just might cut out the template this afternoon and start to play. After all, you can never have too many pincushions or small quilts!

Thanks for sharing, Kathie!

I love how your big quilt is growing. A charm quilt, all different reds is a great idea - you have lots of reds! (so do I - I just love red)

Your new year is off to a great start! I used to make a doll quilt every New Year's Day. Wonder what happened to that tradition? Must get in sewing room!

There is something cheerful about pinwheels and the red and white make them especially so.
I like the border on the mini, too.
Thanks for sharing your method.

I like the border on the small one. I can't believe you have that many red fabrics! You haven't repeated one yet?

I've just come to the blog via sewkalico and love your work! Red and white is so striking.

I love the size of this block...I made a quilt of 30's fabrics where each little unit measured 3 inches. I much prefer this size...it looks great with just the red windmills!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

All your red is fantastic. Thanks for sharing the measurements for the mini-pinwheel. It's been added to my "must-make" list.

Happy New Year! I love your idea of 12 little quilts in 2012. I think that's going on my "must-make" list, too. :-)

I made one of these quilts by hand. I made blocks all the time when we were on a plane or a road trip. It didn't end up being a very big quilt but the only one I've ever made my hand. :)

I found a tutorial a couple of years ago, called Whirlygiggle, here http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2009/01/whirlygiggle-measurements.html.
It looks the same as yours and I've done some.

Yes it is a block that has been around for a long time! I just made mine smaller and never saw anyone do that before.
I was happy to share the measurements, it was a bit complicated when I was trying to scale down the block.
My other one, the large size is not the same size as hers either...
But thanks for letting me know someone else out there in blog land shared the pattern too!
That’s wonderful
Kathie
