Ok I am in AWE over these fit to be geese rulers I could not believe how easy to make PERFECT flying geese in a manner of minutes
I made this little quilt in less then an hour and 1/2.

All you have to do is sew the block together lay the ruler on top and then trim
LOOK how little waste there is.

I bought these rulers and have no affiliation with Open Gate. As I said yesterday I am not a gadget/ruler person but these are AMAZING , I love stars and flying geese I will be using these rulers a lot, I found them so easy to use and very happy with the result. I just had to share this with you.
now to decide do I put borders on this little quilt or not, what do you think????
borders, red or white? thanks!

Thanks Kathie, definitely considering this one.

I think a white border with red binding...hand quilted border will be beautiful! Thanks for the tip on the ruler, I love flying geese!

I agree! Not a gadget person either, but these ones are a must have.

I have a red and white flying geese vintage doll quilt (white background, red geese) and it doesn't have a border. It looks a little primitive and I like that. Yours would look great with or without the border but I think I prefer it without. I loved seeing some red and white today!

These rullers remind me of the Tucker Trimmer they seem to work the same way and really do save a lot of time.

Just a red binding...need to look into this ruler!

Perfece flying geese and a little top in 30 minutes-----I have to check this ruler out. Thanks for sharing.

Love the little quilt. With border/without border? Either works for me. :-)

I was thinking of buying this ruler too, but then I discovered the No-Waste Flying Geese Method. You can make 4 Flying Geese Blocks in a matter of MINUTES with this method, and absolutely no waste, I'm not kidding. I actually learned it from the book, Scrap
Quilt Sensation, by Katharine Guerrier, but a good tutorial for it is also on Sarah Fielke's website (she's the other half of the Material Obsession books).
With this method you can make your Flying Geese all the same, like your, or scrappy. Happy quilting!

Cool ruler. How small of a "goose" can you make with it?

Kathie said...

susan,

I have tried that method and they all don’t come out as even as I would like
Must be the way I am sewing or something but these come out and you don’t even need to pin to sew the geese together!
Thank goodness there are many ways/options for all of us

I admit, I was skeptical when you mentioned these rulers before. Not big on gadgets, either, unless they really are "the better way". Now I will need to check them out.
I'd go no border, red binding--and I am a border person--but if you are "inspired by antique quilts", then I'd go no border. : )

It'll be lovely with or without borders! I'll have to look for those rulers.

i love your little red/white quilt...so fresh looking. i could see it with a border...maybe a red shade just a bit lighter, or...no border with just binding would look good too. boy, that's a tough call. anyway you do it, it will look great. thanks for the tip on the ruler...i'm a gadget girl so i'm loving it. anything to make the job easier is good in my book. :) happy sewing. janae'

I just used this ruler yesterday for a small quilt and it turned out great. My vote is for no border. I like just as it is.

As my DH says (who loves to go to Harbor Freight) - every job needs the perfect tool!! Great job - I think no border. Maybe multi colored stripe binding.

Such perfect geese and so striking in red and white. I need to check that ruler out. Thanks.

Here's a tip for using that ruler. Take a stack of 2 or 3 post-it notes and stick it to the underside of the ruler so that the corner of the post-it stack lines up with the lines marking the edges of the goose section of the block. This makes the goose section of the ruler a little thicker so it pushes up against the sky triangles (if you've pressed the seams toward the sky triangles) and locks the ruler onto the right position on the block.
I picked up that tip from someone else (Carrie Nelson?) and have been using it successfully for years. Recently I discovered the new Bloc-Loc rulers for trimming Half-Square Triangles and LOVE them. They also have a geese trimming block but I haven't tried one of those yet as the rulers themselves are kinda pricy. You can view them at www.blocloc.com (no affiliation)

I want this ruler. It saves time and that's what I always miss.

I have problems with flying geese. Sometimes they are fine and then a few not so good. I am assuming you are oversize cutting for the block and then trimming to size.

I've got these rulers to and love them! Neat little tools!

If it were mine I'd just do a red binding to show off the geese. Great job - it sounds like you had lots of fun with your new toy!

tiny 1" white border, then a red binding. Too many FG rulers to try...

I'm not a gadget person either but I sure love those rulers...the geese come out perfect every time!

cute little quilt. I vote for a border. how about pink or cheddar?

liz said...

I think it needs a border. Your quilts always look so neat and perfect: )
I'm going to get that ruler!

Perhaps no border, but a small red prairie point binding would be oh so fabulous. It will tell you what it wants - I'm certain of it.

Love the red geese. I am also working on a little one but with a different ruler. It's working great also.

Hot dignity what fun!! Thanks for sharing. I have no idea on the border or not… awww shucks, come to think of it - I do. Yes on the border. It'll make the geese stand out, set them apart. I'm thinkin'… ;)

I have that ruler and love using it! I even got it in two sizes. I love your red/white flying geese. It's fabulous.

The little quilt is very neat--looks like a good ruler. This is one block that has many ways to make--just need to find the right one!! I just bought an antique applique quilt top that has a candy cane border--repeated red & white slanted rectangles (not the correct math term)--around the entire edge. Would give a strip effect to the triangles. Just a thought--know whatever you decide on will be great!!

Okay, I guess you have convinced me that I may need this ruler! I was hoping not to add to my ever growing collection.
I wish I had had it when I made my red and white geese!
are you going to cut your on the diagonal like the inspiration quilt?
love it kathie

Barb said...

p.s. are you making 4 at a time?

Maureen said...

Love it - very graphic! Not sure it needs a border.
