I started making these blocks as soon as I saw the antique quilt in American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine a few years ago.

Once I started making the blocks I thought I would set the blocks differently then the antique quilt , I just loved the blocks with the bit of cheddar in them but yet all scrappy! For me the cheddar gives the quilt sparkle and a bit of balance using 100's of different fabrics.
This is the lay out I was considering.

History Repeated, Block Exchange Quilts by the 19-th Century Patchwork Diva's
Betsy Chutchian and Carol Staehle came out and I liked the way the blocks were set in the quilt in the book, if you need the pattern its in this book :).
I like the way the blocks were set in the quilt in the book too, the cheddar border how could you go wrong?
I always like having a piecing project , blocks like this , to make in-between working on other projects. Sometimes I just don't feel like working on the quilt in progress so being able to sit and sew 50 h s t and then making a few blocks appeals to me....
yes this is one of my on going projects (now doesn't that sound better then ufo?)

Do you have a project like this????

Ooh I adore your second layout Kathie, then if you add those borders and flying geese, wow, what a project! The cheddar certainly adds a beautiful pop to the blocks. I love seeing how people 'evolve' their quilts! xo

I truly believe in the saying fate has it! there was a reason you didn`t go rushing in to this quilt and I can see why I love that layout and may have to get that book.
it is a perfect HST setting and I have some cheddar that would dance all over them. just love what inspiration!

I love this block too. You never get bored piecing them. Your color is gorgeous Kathie - Hugs Nat

I am indeed working on a similar project right now... your scrappy hourglass quilt from volume two of SewScrappy! I'm placing myself cutting out the fabric squares and not letting myself get overwhelmed with the number or needed squares and resulting blocks! So interesting to be learning new life lessons at my advanced age... *lol*

I really like your blocks...and in fact, I to have (even several) on going projects to change from big projects. I sew a lot of them in the evening, since I don't like TV and my husband does! This way we still spend our evenings together.

Yes, it's comforting to go back to a project, pick it up and just start piecing. I've yet to start any of the projects from this book, but I just love looking through it. This is one of my favorite blocks. Lots of setting options - love the one you're considering. It has more movement.

No but I should!!!! I love the triangles, such a simple but very effective shape.

Yes!!! In fact, you just reminded me that I started making 3" HSTs to make into a quilt, but they languish in a plastic shoe box because I had forgotten about them. I also have log cabin blocks that I work on mainly while traveling. (blocks finish at 5") I do love your layout for the HST quilt! That will be awesome! Good luck with the ongoing project. I will try to remember all my ongoing projects and am going to really finish some long term ones this year.

Yes, I have several projects that I use as filler when I want to quit the other project. Then I add more and eventually forget what I was doing so I start another project. Does that make sense?

Personally, I like the setting you came up with. I think that really sparkles. Of course, I love the cheddar populating all the blocks.

I think this is going to be my next take-along project. My + and x blocks are now enough for something big and triangles are always calling.I really love that layout.

Wonderful Kathie - I start new projects and rarely finish - I wish I had more self discipline.

I love the old fashioned look of this - you do wonderful work. Are you machine piecing or hand piecing?
And also how large/small are the triangles?

Yum, yum, yummy! I loved that block with the cheddar HST, and seeing yours just confirms that I would enjoy making one. I usually have a couple such projects going though they may languish for ages, patiently waiting for my attention.

Wonderful hst project, fun to see it grow. I like the idea of having something to work on between projects, that is where I sometime hit a blank.

Lori said...

Love the hst! There is so much that can be done with them!!

Yes I keep a project like this going also. I love all your half squares triangles. They are amazing!

What a fabulous project, Kathie. I don't have an on-going project, however I see where it could be lots of fun.

Nedra said...

Wow, Kathie, that is a labor of love. Someday I would like to make a HST quilt.
I have a Trip Around the World quilt made with scraps that I add blocks to from time to time. It's an on going project that will take some time to finish.

I have those itty-bitty nine-patches for my "belated birthday quilt", and as soon as PG starts shipping this year's Summer BOW, I'll have another on-going project.

Oh... and then I have all those HTSs from the swap thing at the LQS a month ago... excuse me while I go back and look at your pictures again... :)

Oh I just love this!! I like the blocks arranged at the beginning of the post as well as set with the red flying geese. I adore the sparkle of cheddar! I don't have a piecing project like this on the go right now - I'm trying to be good and not start anything new. Maybe I should just start piecing hst's and see what happens :0)

Love the setting for your hst's! They look so good.
Thanks for sharing.

That was an amazing antique with that cheddar--I remember it well! Love your interpretation. It is good to have a "always there" type of project. HSTs can build up fast!

I certanly do have all kind of ideas in my head but they all start so that the first thing I have to do is to sort my fabrics.

Love to see you next week, I cant wait : D

I love the block layout of your HSTs, they have a shimmery effect. I have projects at all stages.. I really need to get them under control.. :)

I love your project I do remember it. At this moment it looks like that I have a lot of these kind of projects hidden in baskets, suitcases etc.

I have always loved this quilt and I really like the layout you've shown. Someday I'll start collecting all my hst's into one project!

LOVE these scrappy little blocks! Two days ago at Judy Roche's quilt study group, we saw a set of antique ones! The "sparkle" in those blocks was created by the red/yellow combo used a couple of times in each block! Can't believe I did not think to measure them but if memory serves me correctly, they finished at
1-1/4"...what size are yours? Judy gave me permission to show them...will do as soon as I can!

Janet O. said...

I really like the way you are setting your blocks.
I have a few projects of little pieces that I work on now and then, here and there.

Janet said...

I'm so happy to see your triangles again, I've been working with some too. I love all the layout options. They're all great lay outs, how to make a decision? That's the hard part.

Sharon said...

Wow, these blocks are stunning! And you're right - that cheddar kind of grounds all those other colors. I think all the settings you've shown are great. But I love the one with the flying geese!

Yes, I have a few long-term projects. They are perfect when I want to sew something other than what I'm supposed to be doing! hee hee!

cityquilter grace said...

don't tempt me, please! it is a gorgeous quilt and super easy too!

I like to have a leader/ender project and a mindless piecing project on the go at all times; ones that you don't have to think or struggle with, you can just get lost in the zone of piecing for a short while. I really like the sprinkle of cheddar in your blocks, looks very good.

Love your quilt.

Yes, I have a couple of on-going projects. One is Tonya's Lego quilt. I love making those blocks. Another project is Em's 4 patch quilt. I also do not consider these UFOs. They are quilts in progress, or QIPs!

Vivian said...

I'm always sewing random HSTs together (as leaders and enders) and trimming them to whatever size they make. Not sure what project I'll choose first (I have several ideas), but the HSTs are easy to make, and they're trimmed and ready, sorted by size. One of these days -- one of these days.

Before I started reading your post, the cheddar in your HSTs caught my attention. It's just too happy to be ignored.
