My Wall of Little quilts.... I wanted to share this with you as I hope it inspires you to make a little quilt. This is what I see sitting at my sewing machine. Just makes me happy. My own art gallery wall. I really don't think of my quilts as works of art but when I see them on the wall like this I start to think maybe they are....

Ever since I read that Gwen Marston has made 450 or more little quilts I have been thinking about how many I have made and some day maybe I could make that many as well! a new personal goal, maybe! I find making little quilts really rewarding and fulfilling . Mostly its the satisfaction of finishing a quilt in between the queen size quilts I normally make!
Its also about taking time to work on a color combo I might not have tried or used in a big quilt, or trying out a block or just making a little quilt because I was inspired. I am always inspired by antique quilts but there are many times I am inspired by others , here are two books I looked thru yesterday and making nine patches won for one of Gwens quilts in this book....

Well it won't be a quilt top today.....I am off to Lancaster Pa to do a little fabric shopping with some friends! So tell me have I inspired you to make a little quilt????

there are so many good little quilt books out there I will be suggesting more in the next few weeks.

Your wall of small quilts is fabulous Kathie - such an inspiration. My favorite is the blue and cheddar, it just jumps out at me. I might give a small one a try this weekend ....

Very inspirational, I have made a few small quilts but not as many as you, and after seeing your wall I want to make more. How have you hung them on the wall?

You always inspire me! In my mind I make little quilts all day long, but in reality, my sewing time is much shorter. I adore your wall and every little quilt on it!

Every post you write inspires me! I love your mini wall! I love all your mini`s I love all your biggies tooo..LOL
I have been following Kathleen Tracey`s Yahoo Group and making a mini a month out of her books. I love minis you are right they are a kinda quick satisfaction especially when you are doing hand work on a big project. Sometimes you need to be reminded that there are an end to the means...
Thanks for sharing your wonderful view.

You had me quite a few posts ago. I'm celebrating finishing writing my school reports on the weekend by starting a quilt from Gwen's book Twenty Little Log Cabin Quilts....only problem is....which one? :) Your wall looks marvellous.

Sitting there with all of those little quilts would make me happy, too! Love it!

Your wall of little quilts is very inspiring. One by itself is not nearly as impressive as so many nicely arranged on a wall. I am studying them trying to decide which one I like best.
Off to shop for fabric in Amish country. And maybe some delicious Amish style food? A wonderful plan for the day.

have fun in Lancaster today. Be sure to show us your loot tomorrow
Is that a new book?

what a wonderful wall of quilts that you have. The only little quilts I have made are wall hangings and I have only made a couple normally making large quilts. I like what you have done with these. Have fun Lancaster - I so love that area when I visit there.

I think your little quilt "art" gallery is fantastic. I too love to make little quilts and hope to have a similar gallery someday. 450? Maybe not that many but wouldn't that be awesome! Have fun in Lancaster.

I just love your wall of little quilts and yes, you are the one that inspired me to start making little quilts. I think I have become addicted.

Heather said...

I am certainly inspired, they make a fabulous, graphic display.

Ironically enough, I was going to email you and tell you that I finally took your advice and made a little 9 patch quilt. I hand quilted and bound it last week and I absolutely love it! It was so rewarding to just get something done. So thank you!

Love your wall of little quilts!!! They are each great but the multiplied impact of them all knocks your socks off! I have two small tops ready to quilt now. Yes you have inspired me to make more! Thanks Kathie!

Yes I want a wall like that!
Don't you just love Gwen Marston to me she is a quilting rock star!

Love your art gallery! I think they really do look like a "collection" put together by a curator. One thing I would not have realized seeing them one at a time, is how varying widths of the borders adds so much interest. Thanks so much!
I have started making small quilts, but only recently & inbetween working on larger projects. It really is educational & fun.
A question, how are you hanging them on the wall? I love that atleast in a grouping, the edges are crisp, with no supplemental lines from hangers. Thanks again!

Oh, Kathie, it's downright breathtaking! Yes, you have inspired me to make small quilts and have been for quite awhile now. I need to have a mini quilt roll call to see how many there are and quilt and bind the flimsies. Enjoy your day in PA country.

Dixie said...

Your wall is wonderful and certainly has me inspired as I stare up at the blank wall above this computer! Maybe I'll start with a little quilt made from the leftover bits I'm chopping off from making flying geese! Your wall is a joy to see.

You wall of little quilts is a work of art. I'm working on mine but have a lot of catching up to do. It seems such a shame to just put your mini quilts away in a closet when you could look at them every day. Shopping in Lancaster, PA, sound wonderful.

I am inspired. I love your wall of little quilts. Maybe I could aspire to make as many as you have on that wall, but 450? Not seeing it happen.
Have a lovely day!

You inspired me in that direction last year when I started reading your blog. And when you decided to make you gallery on your wall--that inspired me even more. I have made a few little quilts since then, But the projects for other people (gifts) keep taking up my time and I only have two of the little tops quilted and bound. They are hanging in my sewing room, but not on the same wall. I still dream of a gallery--I will eventually make it happen!

Your wall of quilts is FABULOUS! Oh my gosh - it's really gorgeous! Good job!

Have fun with your shopping. :)

Heartsdesire said...

Your wall of quilts is fabulous as well as very inspiring. I've been making little quilts since I started quilting with the book, Little Quilts all Through the House. I love playing with scraps of fabric and small quilts are perfect for that because they are usually a quick finish. Also, I can practice my hand quilting if I feel like it. Nine patch is my favourite block, so I'll be looking forward to seeing yours with the sawtooth border.

I've been fired up about little quilts for years, but much more of late. They fulfill the creative spark like bigger quilts can't - nearly instant gratification! Your wall of quilts looks absolutely wonderful! How did you hang them?

Karen said...

You always inspire me and yes, yes and yes!! A little quilt is in my future - soon!

Doniene said...

I'm always intimidated when I see how many comments - I think, Kathie won't care if I comment - but YOU DO INSPIRE me! I patterned several of my small Christmas quilts after yours! So thank you - you've broadened my horizons! Have fun shopping!

Blessings

Love the wall of little quilts. They all fit together, even though they are all different!! The little T quilt jumps out at me (son named Tom) and I love green. I will have to start sewing all my cut up pieces together, as soon as I move my sewing machine to MY NEW SEWING ROOM!!!!!

I just took a two day workshop from Gwen a couple of weeks ago. In 36+ years of quilting i can honestly say she has impressed and inspired me more than any other quilt teacher. Because I started making little civil ear quilts I now have a collection of approx. 3 dozen of those sweet little things. I love them all and every last one of them sports a label on the back. Back to Gwen, she brought such a lovely array of quilts along with her to share with us. I really don't know how she has accomplished all of the books and quilts. I have a dedicated bookshelf just for her books! Can you tell I am a fan?

You certainly have inspired me Kathie. I bought a great book from teh Book Depository by Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham on small quilts annd there are a few that I have my eye on. I bought it in the hope that it would make me finally do something with the enormous amount of scraps I have. I love your wall of little quilts.

What an inspiring wall to look at!! I was just thinking of making a small quilt and I pulled out some quilt books to look through. You're so right-they offer a great chance to try a new block or a different combination of colors.

Your wall is very inspiring. I've made lots of little quilt but never counted them.

I have a nice group of books to give me ideas for making little quilts--and I've probably made 18 or 20--but seeing your wonderful wall is the ultimate form of inspiration! What fun it must be to look at that as you make even more.
I totally agree--finishing little quilts in between the larger ones is so satisfying. And if we don't like the finished project, we didn't spend a lot of time or fabric.

Wow - that wall of quilts is amazing. Ever since I saw my first one, I have wanted to make a wall of quilts. I've made a start, but not nearly as big as yours. Congrats! I guess I am going to have to aim for a high number as well.

You are always such an inspiration Kathie, and your wall of little quilts is incredible. Thanks too for showing how you hang them in your next post! xo

Thanks for sharing your little quilt wall! Yes, it's very inspiring. I didn't realize you had already made so many littles!

I'd like to put all of mine up on a wall, just have to decide where. Yes, I use small pins to hang mine too. I have little quilts tucked here and there in my home, and I like to change them often. I also need to get out all my littles and see how many I have. I don't think I have as many as you do!

I, too, love little blocks and little quilts. I have loads of little 3 inch nine patches that I swap with friends in a Yahoo group. I MUST make them into something soon. Kathie L in Allentown
