This quilt was my second favorite quilt in the exhibit at the Mercer Museum.
I still don't think I can be this brave and use the lancaster blue as my background on any quilt!
you have to look at the border of this quilt, it was just sooooo amazing! look how she pieced this the appliqué was done at about 2" from the edge of the fabric before she pieced the border on.
I loved how she handles the blank space from the appliqué to the seam, look at the quilting between the appliquéd border and the seam allowance. Then she quilts a Beautiful feather border.....
It always amazes me how much I learn looking at antique quilts as well as being inspired by them. I need to try floating a border like this and just let it end. YOU DON'T need to have the applique border connect (ok admit it , how much easier would that be!)

Can you see the quilting between this applique and the seam allowance of the border?
she handled this beautifully.
check out all the circles, see don't fret if yours aren't always perfectly round!
can you tell I was so intrigued with this border? the card next to the quilt said " The border of this quilt resembles Pennsylvania German scherenschitte, a form of decorative paper cutting.
Rose and Holly Berry Applique quilt Lancaster County Pa
1890-1910 Collection of Paul and Rita Flack."
scroll down to previous posts to view many of the other quilts exhibited at the Mercer Museum exhibit . Again I would like to thank Paul and Rita Flack for sharing their antique quilts with us.
