first I cut the batting much bigger then the backing fabric, I iron it nice and flat bring it over to the table and lay it on top of the backing fabric make sure there are no tears in the batting , bring the hot iron over to the table press the 3 layers together then baste, then trim to the backing fabric.
I use the ruler and start laying down masking tape where I want to hand quilt, this time its 1/4" up from the seam each side will be working from the bottom up to the middle, note 1/4" is NOT 1/2 the block size I didn't want it to be right down the middle of the block, why? just because! when I hand quilt I try different things :)
OH and did you notice the arrows ? YES thats to keep me hand quilting on the right side of the tape!
Vertical quilting done, now working on the horizontal rows , don't look too closely at the stitches still trying to find my rhythm with hand quilting but you can see the design the quilting is creating, for me on this quilt its more about adding texture. The borders will be last and for those I haven't decided how yet....next time I show this quilt it will be bound and ready to mail to the recipient, I just hope he likes it.
I think he will be shocked and pleasantly surprised. Have to be honest it feels so good to be hand quilting again, one of my top goals for 2013

Your wee quilt looks great Kathie and the quilting looks perfectly good to me. The recipient will be sure to love it. Do you quilt the little ones in the hoop?
Thank you for that useful instruction!
PS I've also just looked back over some recent posts I missed and have added two books to my shopping list ;-)
So cute, I'm always amazed at how we all do the same tasks so differently. Looking good.
Lookin' good! Do you use a hoop to quilt or do you do lap quilting? I used to never use a hoop, but now I do much better hand stitches with a hoop. It's always nice to hand quilt. I hope the art does not get lost with all of the machine quilting going on!
It's always nice to see how others prep for hand quilting. And yes! Hand quilting is definitely something I will take up again this year. My goal for the year....slow down and enjoy each thing I make instead of hurry up and get on to the next one!
Happy day!
Handmade is always a special gift and hand quilted is a true treasure.
Love this one, been wanting to make something similar, this may be the extra push I needed. Thanks for the tutorial!
Very nice! Do you iron the batting to get rid of creases or to make it a bit flatter for that nice thin antique look?
I was hand quilting my challenge project in Sunriver and my friend Randy says, "Oh you are doing the big stitch."....No, I wasn't doing the big stitch, but I think I will say that's what it is! lol
Great tips! Might try to hand quilt a small quilt this year too! Thanks for the inspiration. Do you have a favorite thread and needle?
That's exactly the way I hand quilt my minis, Kathi. The only difference is that I use 1/4" masking tape.
I'm sure the recipient will love it. If not, send it to me! *wink* I'll love it!
Looks to me like your rhythm has been found! : )
Your quilting is fantastic! And I felt the same way when I quilted a little piece for my friend. I haven't done it much lately, and it feels so good hand quilt again! Hoping to get a LOT more of in this year!
You might want to try the blue Painter's tape instead of the masking tape - It has worked well for me. I find it easier to use, and find it reusable. :-)
Thank you for sharing. I never have pressed the batting. I will try it next time. And press all 3 layers together is such a clever idea. Like you I am doing much basting and I use masking tape too.
But ... I can't do so nice tiny stitches when I am quilting. Yours look so great!
I've got a chart to track my 6 goals for Jan and one is hand quilting BTCT. I'm jotting down the time I spend on it each day. I'll be happy if I hit 15 min minimum each day! Can't wait to see how the textures appear on this piece, he will love it!
Lovely, hand quilting is so soothing.
Thanks for sharing your tips.
Thanks for showing us your method- looks like it works a treat! And why not hand quilt a little quilt - so manageable and your quilting looks wonderful. A bed quilt is another matter of course...haha :)
Every Stitch
Arrows on the tape is a really good idea. This is going to be such a darling quilt when it's finished!
I am a retiredlong arm quilter, retired from customer quilts that is. I have always preferred hand quilting. Most of my small quilts are done by hand.
It is always interesting to learn the methods of other quilters. The recipient should really love it!
WHat a great idea! So refreshing to see hand quilting out in blogland...love it!
good to see you hand quilting again. It is going to be lovely
Vey cute little guy.
Thanks for sharing your method. I use masking tape, but put it on just as I'm ready to quilt. Would you do it this way on a larger quilt? I was told not to leave the masking tape on the quilt for long because of the sticky stuff. I guess that would only happen if the tape was left on for a very long time.
I am going to try pressing next time. Never thought of doing that.
I like you sharing your 'how I do it' on your hand quilting! I always struggled hand quilting on the small ones. I dunno, they just seem so light weight after I quilt on a larger one and I can't seem to control the little ones very well. Of course, I just LOVE them when they are finished. Small and miniatures are just so darn sweet!!
love your little quilt. the red arrow is a good reminder and tip.
Oh I wish it was cool enough to be hand quilting!! Enjoy!
Yay! Great to see that little quilt is going to be hand quilted.it's wonderful to hear how you do things. One of my 2013 goals is to always have a hand quilting quilt on the go. I've finished one and just got another ready today.
That is a lovely little quilt. And I love hand-quilting too. How sensible to put arrows on the masking tape!
I am always interested to learn how others finish a task and if it works for you then that is ok. The stitching looks very neat from where I am sitting and how could the recipient not like it?
Darling little quilt.
Gracias por mostrarnos !!!!!!!!!!!
I have also found that painters tape is useful in machine quilting. I use the arrow system as well. It is far too easy to get confused! Your little quilt will be extra lovely with the hand quilting added to it:)
