I have wanted to make one of these string star quilts but this one maybe a bit too liberated for me but I bet I know a few of you that are going to love this one!
HOw modern looking is this quilt? so unique can't you see this done in bolder colors , say grey and black, so graphic.
Ok this quilt just makes me smile, OMG isn't it beautiful? love how the one block is framed.
so many beautiful blocks in this quilt, some I have seen in patterns of different quilts of today.
ok I am just obsessed with making these blocks right now, here are another 24 I made since monday
Its growing on the wall!
so fun to look at all the fabrics isn't it?
another shot of fabrics...
and here is whats on the cutting table this morning, 3 more blocks to whip up today hopefully.
are you wondering why the block is there? heres a tip leave a block on the table where you pin so you keep the fabric orientation going in the same direction every time....don't ask how I know that! I really was trying to change the way I worked this year but not sure I can. When I am inspired to work on one quilt I really just have to go with it. Guess we all have our own system of working for me its doing what makes me happy.

Your quilt is getting quite large. How much bigger are you going to make it?,the book looks fab.
Love your system! And your quilt blocks of course...did you see mine from earlier this year? Log cabin quilt are so much fun!!
You are making a lot of progress Kathie. Like your blocks your fabric everything
No better system than doing what makes you happy! And what gorgeous quilts you produce with that system!
This one is also very beautifull
Kathie can you provide more info on the book? I could not find it online. Your log cabin is looking wonderful, it will be a beauty!
I really love your log cabin quilt. I'm not as organized as you are, but when doing log cabins, I keep a finished block by my machine so I don't accidentally attach the fabrics to the wrong part. It is amazing how long it took me to figure out what was wrong with one of my log cabins one day. It was decidedly elongated. :)
Your post brought back memories of my visits to Shelburne Museum many years ago, one of my favorite places! Just dug out the book I picked up there: 55 Famous Quilts from the Shelburne Museum, copyright 1990. Can still picture the big exhibit room and the fantastic quilts we saw there.
I just love your log cabin blocks - so many awesome fabrics. Every time I see it, I just want to start a new log cabin quilt! Love!
You're inspiring me to make a log cabin. love yours. are the strips 1 1/2" wide?
I love how your quilt is looking. It is going to be so beautiful. Hugs
Looking so good! You are really getting lots done, quickly! Thanks for the tip on laying out the fabric. Great idea!
Now that looks like an interesting book. I've always wanted to visit the Shelburne ~ it's on my bucket list.
Chugging along on the log cabin and it's looking good!
OMG the quilt in the 3rd photo is to die for!!! The logs are taking over your command center! lol
Great book for reference. I know by experience it's easy to get the light going in a different direction. Good idea to just keep a sample block right where you can see it.
Gorgeous quilts! LOVE the applique one! And that liberated stars quilt.....it's made differently than the ones I've see lately. The stars look to be crazy-pieced as one entire star, and then maybe they were appliqued to the backing? It's fantastic!
Another loaded post, Kathie. Looks like a great book for inspiration.
The stars are too liberated for my structured need--though fascinating.
The applique quilt is superior!
The "modern looking" quilt--I see some Kaffe thrown in there somewhere.
The log cabin blocks are just so fun to look at. I would love to stand at your design wall with my nose close to the fabric, studying all of the different prints they contain. : )
I'm CRAZY about your log cabin blocks (quilt). I can see why you just keep making blocks. :-)
I do something similar when I lay out a block - sanity is important. LOL
That's a lot of blocks, so your method must be working :) Love the traditional red center square.
Looks like a great book, I will hav to look for it.
Good stuff over here girl!! Inspiring me to get my log cabin finished!!
I love all the little Log Cabin blocks - that is going to be a spectacular quilt.
As for the "way you work", I think you should stick with the one that 'brung you... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Your work is fabulous so keep doing what you're doing!
As for the book, it's wonderful. But it is also hilarious to see how many antique quilts from the museum look really familiar... as in, I recognize them as "recent" patterns. :)
Another book that looks good, keep them coming!
I use the same system--one finished block out where I can see it and refer to it often! Love your book reviews!
Now I have another book in my library cart, our libraries do carry good quilt books so nice to see titles, I can look up. I am still waiting for the ones from Sturbridge village, it has been on wait for months so might hit the library it is in and see if I can just pick it up.
Debbie
Another great book - Thank you for sharing these with us! I'm curious about the scrappy stars, are the white pieces set in, or are the stars appliqued onto a white background? Your log cabin is really looking wonderful!!
You're making wonderful progress with your log cabins!!!!
I just love your scrappy log cabin and cannot believe how quickly those little blocks are growing. But how do you keep them on your design wall - is it a specialist design wall or are they pinned to a sheet - they sit so nicely!
Your blocks and layout system are working perfectly. You're running out of wall!
Vicki and I went to the Shelburne a few years ago when they exhibited their entire quilt collection. The one at the top was my very favorite. Gwen and I spent some time discussing this quilt at the retreat this fall. This may be the book that came out for that exhibition. The photography is wonderful!
Another fabulous book to check out. I hope to visit the shelburne one day.....one day.....
Wow - that looks like a great book - where did you order it from? Your quilt is looking awesome as usual!
Your log cabin caught my eye and is just wonderful .That book hhasawesome quilts.Happy sewing!!
Your log cabing is looking even more spectacular and if the process works for you the stick with it. You learn by making mistakes. My first STATW block took so long to get it right that I made another 3 in half the time it took to do the first one. Wonder what will be on that design wall next.
Am so scared that if I visit the Shelburne I'll never leave... Your log cabin is looking fantastic!
I've always adored log cabin quilts - yours is beautiful! It's been years since I made one. This is definitely calling to me.
Oh this is wonderful!
