its a mix of light taupe/grey colors on a cream background just beautiful

oh just look it close up.... La Belle Fleur by French General for Moda
I just had to buy the bolt...
so would you be brave enough to use it for a background of an applique quilt?

and wait to you see what else I ordered !  a sneak peak?
ok ok here it is a 1/2 yard bundle
there are lots of blues and browns I can use with this background fabric :)

Couldn't resist those blues and browns either, two fat quarter packs sitting on my table. I can't see any reason not to use the toile as a background. Have seen much busier and darker prints used quite successfully.

It will be interesting to see the results. I think it is subtle enough to look wonderful, especially with those dark browns and blues you ordered.

USE IT....it will be beautiful. You know I would!!!! And I love the History repeated - great choice.

The fabric is gorgeous...and that bundle of fabrics is fabulous. Bet it feels like Christmas! I think the toile would work great as a background in harmony with your applique!

Wow, I just took an appliqué class this past Tuesday Feb 12 and the instructor had used this very same print for her background and the blocks she had done were stunning. The blocks were large, 16 inch, so you could see much of thie toile. I was fortunate enough to find the very same fabric for my block for the class and I had purchased two yards a week before class. Once I got it home I fell more in love with it and after the class I drove way out of my way to get the rest of the bolt, three yards. I don't regret doing it, it's gorgeous. So a definite yes from me!

Oh man, you're lighting the fabric inspiration this morning. What joy over coffee!!! I enjoyed reading thru some of these comments. Lakegaldonna has my vote.

Fabulous as background! That is one of the best prints ever. Go for it!

Go for it! That toile is gorgeous and would be amazing for an appliqué background.

I love that fabric! I think it will be gorgeous with applique. If you don't want to make it, you can send it to me and I'll do it! LOL

Heather said...

Oh, I think it would be lovely and think I need to get some for myself!

Lori said...

It is very pretty. I don't think it is a matter of being brave, Kathie, its a matter of finding the right pattern for it. It is so pretty, it would be a waste as a backing:)

Sue said...

Oh yes, it's gorgeous, Kathie. I have some of this too! I'm a sucker for bird toile.

That dusty taupe tone is so restful to the eye, it's beautiful. I think it would be fine as a background!

Janet O. said...

Come on, Kathie, you can do it! You know it will be stunning!
Those blues and browns are calling me, but my budget is telling me "NO"! I did just buy a few FQ of Indigo Crossing. That will have to do for now.

I think the toile would make a great applique background. Of course I love toile and can't think of much it wouldn't work for. LOL. I bought half yard pieces of that same collection and am considering ordering yardage of some of the shirtings. I think they're the best shirtings I've seen in a while.

What a beautiful toile!! I think it would make a fabulous background for applique. I would try it :0)

Can´t wait to see the result.Your fabrics are yummiest!!

Vicky said...

Absolutely use it! Some of my favorite applique quilts I've made were on unusual backgrounds and look wonderful!

Sharon said...

Yes, yes, yes, use it for a background, its to fabulous to be used as a backing. Since you have the whole bolt, you will still have some left for another project. And that FQ stack, no wonder you bought it, the fabrics are lovely

Maureen said...

Love the toile! Can't wait to see what you have in mind.

How big are the applique pieces? I'd use this if they're big but not if they're on the small size. I love the fabric you ordered!

Jane S. said...

Two words: DO IT! :)

Phyllis said...

I am with Jane S. (above), do it! I am using something similar for the applique parts of my Phebe quilt & it is beautiful & so different from a solid background. You'll love it!
I love your line: "I just had to buy the bolt" , have to use that line myself now and then :-)!

Jans said...

Once in a lifetime you must do something crazy.
USE IT!
Will be very beautifull.
Greetings Janny S.

Absolutely! It will be beautiful. It is appropriate for the pre-1830's quilts found in the first set of class notes from Eileen that I sent you. This will make a magnificent medallion quilt. At least that's what I'd use it for.

It's going to be so hard to keep my no-buy pledge with you showing all these fabulous fabrics!

When I saw this new line of FG, I was so happy there was a bird toile. YES, use it for the background. I do think your applique design has to be strong, and the colors dark shades of brown, green, reds, etc.. The toile would add dimension. Perhaps a small test quilt first? Of course, I'm sure!

Marge said...

I've used similar toiles as my background in quilts, and I've never regretted it once...Go for it!

Rita said...

Absolutely use the toile! I think it will make a gorgeous background. I just purchased a FQ bundle of History Repeated...I'm doing the free project that is on the Windham site (star quilt). I just fell in love with it.

AnnieO said...

Beautiful bird toile, I agree! Hmm, it would be brave indeed as a background for an applique project but you obviously have a wonderful idea simmering :) Go for it!

Kaaren said...

Anything made with toile is fine by me! I think it would be stunning as a background for applique.

Now if only my budget would allow me to buy that 1/2 yard bundle. Those fabrics are gorgeous!

Jan said...

Heck, yes! Great for a background.

Janet said...

What an awesome background, just needs the right pattern I think. The new fabrics are just the colours I'm using at the moment.

cityquilter grace said...

i definitely would; it's THAT gorgeous...

audrey said...

Gorgeous fabric! Love the birds with the toile and yes, I think I might be brave enough to use it for background if the applique was dominant enough in pattern and fabric color.:)

Cathy said...

Ooh yes definitely a divine background Kathy. I too adore toiles and this is a beauty. Nice little 1/2 yard bundle too!! xo

Nyla said...

I think it will make a gorgeous background for appliqué or piecing. Did you have a pattern in mind? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I think it would be beautiful, go for it!

Kathie, I think the toile would work great as a background. Look at Piece O'Cake Designs' quilts; they use printed backgrounds all the time. As for the 1/2 yd bundle, is there such a thing as fabric envy?

be*mused jan said...

It's been fun reading the comments on your new plans. I think the toile would be lovely if the applique block designs were on the bold side. Too fine, and they might get lost against the large pattern. As always, looking forward to your unique vision!

bloominworkshop said...

Yes! Absolutely! You should use it. It would be beautiful! There is nothing like a good French General fabric.

Rilene said...

This toile is gorgeous! Use it as your background! I love French General, especially this line. The blues and browns are beautiful.

Sharon said...

So, are you convinced to use it yet? The majority seem to think it will be fab, as I do too! It is stunning and will be a knockout background for applique. :)

Sue-Anne said...

I think the toile will be a great background. It's beautiful fabric.

pandchintz said...

Oh Kathie! It's PerFect for an appliqué background - a Must, in fact. Can't wait to see what you make with it and the "pack" - delicious!

Dixie said...

I have a bit of this gorgeous toile fabric, and have often thought how beautiful it would be for an applique quilt. I think a person would just need to make sure there is enough contrast so the applique would not get lost or jumbled looking.

LuAnn said...

Oh I love this fabric and I sure would use it for a background
...in fact I might need to get some of it. Your little quilts are great!!

I love the toile fabric and will be watching as your appliqué blocks develop. Thanks for the inspiration.
